A Flying Horse, Han Dynasty, China, 206 BC - 220 AD. Copyright: Woon Foundation / Northumbria University
The horse has always played an important role in the traditions and history of China. The shape of this horse reflects the successive crossbreeding in the imperial stud farms that resulted in an animal that was faster, more powerful and graceful than the earlier stockier breed of horse hence their description as flying horses. This horse is a burial item and was placed in a tomb to provide a safe afterlife.
